How to prove volunteer hours for Medicaid work requirements

Volunteer time can count toward the 80 hours a month some adults ages 19 to 64 need to show. Official rules call this community service. Your state decides what proof it takes. Here is a simple way to keep a record.

What counts as volunteer time

CMS says community service is unpaid work for the community, done with a real group that watches over the work. Think of a food pantry, a public library, a public school, or another nonprofit. The work should not be for a political campaign.

Your state may have its own list. If you are not sure, ask your state Medicaid agency before you start.

What proof to keep

The federal pages do not list one national form. Your state Medicaid agency tells you what it will take. People often keep:

  • A sign-in sheet with your name, the date, and the hours
  • A short letter or email from the group that names you and the hours
  • Photos of the sign-in sheet or the letter
  • Your own log with the date, place, start time, and stop time

How log80 can help

You can log volunteer hours in the free 80 hours tracker. Add a note with the group's name. You can also add proof photos — a picture of a sign-in sheet or a letter — and keep them with that day's hours. At the end of the month, download a report you can print or save.

Steps to prove volunteer hours

  1. 1

    Ask your state

Ask your state Medicaid agency what proof it wants for volunteer or community service hours.

  2. 2

    Pick a real group

Volunteer with a public office or a nonprofit that keeps a sign-in sheet or can write a letter.

  3. 3

    Sign in each time

Write the date and your hours. Take a photo of the sheet before you leave.

  4. 4

    Log the hours

Open the 80 hours tracker, tap Start and Stop, or add the hours later. Save the photo with that entry.

  5. 5

    Keep the month together

At month's end, download your report and keep the photos or letters with it.
